Lesson Three of Six — Free, and Open to All
Hosting Without Anxiety
The old rules of welcoming guests into your home, scaled to a studio apartment or a suburban kitchen.
The principle
A good host makes people comfortable. A large home was never a requirement for that — attention was.
Before and during
✦
Pick two things to do well, not ten things to do adequately. A thoughtful drink and a clean bathroom carry a gathering further than an elaborate menu you're too stressed to enjoy.
✦
Have a plan for coats, bags, and shoes before anyone rings the bell.
✦
Prepare one thing that doesn't need your attention once guests arrive, so you can actually be present.
✦
Greet everyone by name at the door. It's the fastest way to make someone feel expected, not merely allowed in.
✦
Introduce guests with a reason to talk, not just a name. "This is Sarah, she just got back from six months in Portugal" hands them a conversation.
✦
Notice the quiet person, and circle back to them more than once.
What actually matters
Nobody remembers whether your apartment was small. They remember whether they felt welcome in it.
